What is Task 1?
In IELTS Writing Task 1, you need to describe visual data such as graphs, charts, tables, or diagrams. Your goal is to present information clearly and accurately.
1. Types of Visuals
- Line graphs: Show trends over time
- Bar charts: Compare different categories
- Pie charts: Show proportions or percentages
- Tables: Present detailed numerical data
- Diagrams or processes: Explain steps or stages
Tip: Identify the type of visual first, then decide what to describe.
2. Key Steps
- Analyze the data carefully
- Identify main trends, differences, and key points
- Organize information logically: introduction -> overview -> details
- Use comparative and descriptive language
Tip: Spend 2–3 minutes planning before you start writing.
3. Vocabulary for Task 1
- Increase - rise, grow, climb, soar
- Decrease - fall, drop, decline, dip
- Stable - remain steady, plateau
- Highest/Lowest - peak, reach a low point
- Compare - similarly, in contrast, whereas
Tip: Use a mix of words to avoid repetition and show range.
